Quieter Appliances

Example label

In our increasingly technological society we use many appliances around the home that make a noise - washing machines, vacuum cleaners, power tools, kitchen gadgets, hairdryers and increasingly sophisticated and powerful home entertainment equipment. In the workplace, hearing protection is required by law to protect the hearing of those carrying out noisy jobs - we can make just as much noise at home, with potential to disturb others and put our hearing at risk.

Choosing Equipment

When buying new appliances for the home consider noise - ask suppliers/manufacturers about quieter appliances.

If manufacturers make claims about noise levels they should display an EU CE label, which states the level (see example, right). Noise levels must be stated on lawnmowers and garden equipment. The lower the noise level the quieter it is - for us to notice a difference in levels there needs to be a 3dB(A) difference. Consumer reviews can also be helpful - although noise is not always considered.
